Toronto EMS Shari's Mission Shari Ichelson Silverman, sister to Toronto EMS Paramedic Rob Ichelson, is a 34 year-old mother of 11 year-old Ashley-Ann. Throughout June Shari didn't feel well. Numerous doctors made wildly wrong diagnoses. Shari collapsed and was transported to York Central Hospital by ambulance. They thought she was dehydrated. Blood tests soon revealed the truth: leukemia. Testing at Princess Margaret Hospital provided her with a definitive diagnosis: AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia.)

Ambulance Design Safety Ambulance vehicle design standards in Canada are lagging. Bench seats are career-enders and ergonomic designs are absent. Unfortunately some Provinces such as Ontario have adopted the core material in the KKK manufacturer standard and AMD.

Paramedic Safety Advancement on a Global Scale

Bariatric1

Who are we? We are a group of like-minded Paramedics that believe that Paramedic safety advancment has not kept pace patient care treatments.

Paramedics are required to carry more, provide more, do more - all with less help, more equipment weight, heavier patients - all without research that demonstrates what practices are safe.

Who is generating the research on safety? The manufacturers of the products we are using.

Who is moving paramedic safety forward? No one in particular. It is a hodge-podge of effort dispursed across Canada, that moves forward only when one Paramedic is seriously injuried or even killed.

Even universal legislation on the Paramedic Industry has created situations of unrest and uncertainity, as EMS specialists try to navigate the fragmented laws and regulations that apply to Canadian hospital, labs, industrial and transportation/trucking enviroments.

From the Ground Up

Paramedic Safety International continues to grow and evolve, setting the forefront for Canadian Paramedics; going where others refuse to go.

EMS Chiefs of Canada has taken note and decidely is acting many issues presented by us, including vehicle standards. Municipal services are being forced by their Joint Health and Safety representatives to act becuase labour representatives are sharing information and statistics at unprecedent rates.

Our History

Paramedic Safety Canada started as a local initiative for the Greater Toronto Area. It quickly mushroomed into a Ontario provinicial entity connecting Health and Safety committees from across the province.

Our greatest achievement was pursuing the implementation of a Ministry of Labour Section 21 committee for Paramedic, aptly downsized to a sub-section 21 committee as part of the larger Healthcare Section. We still believe there is the opportunity in the future for Tri-Service Section 21 Committee of Police, Fire and EMS.

With the birth of the sub-Section 21, the union too a major foothold in the province. Paramedic Safety Canda moved ont to the International stage of interconnecting industry safety members. We strive to independently set the Canadian Paramedic Safety National agenda.

emschiefswhitepaperAchieving the future vision of EMS will require collaboration between EMS leaders and public policy makers. The final sections of this report list potential actions EMS leaders and public policy makers can take for each of the key  ecommendations. The EMSCC invites EMS leaders and public policy makers to explore these suggested actions as we seek to create an enhanced, community-based EMS.
