On March 19, 2009 the EMS family lost a friend referred to by many as the Gentle Giant.
Paramedic Brian Smith passed away on Thursday at York Central Hospital in the presence of his loved ones. He was declared brain dead just before 4 pm.
Brian started his career as a Paramedic with Toronto EMS in 1982. He worked in Northwest at 18 Station and later in Northeast on the PCTU out of 25 Station. Most of you may have met Brian during the recent United Way campaign when he took a very active role as the EMS representative.
Brian suffered a massive hemorrhagic CVA while at home on Sunday March 15. He was taken to York Central Hospital in an unresponsive state. A short time later, Brian was transferred to Toronto Western and after a brief assessment was returned to York Central Hospital. Brian had made his wishes very clear to his family and in keeping with those wishes, Brian is currently undergoing assessment for organ donation.
On behalf of Brian’s family and friends, they are very thankful for your thoughts and the memories that have been passed on to them. The laughter and smiles that accompany the stories and tales of Brian’s life in EMS are very comforting. They provide a support during this difficult time and help them in knowing more about, and how full, Brian’s life really is.
